CHAPTER 2

The jarring shrill of the alarm broke into Sandy's dream. She opened her eyes and looked around the room as the fog of sleep dissipated. Groaning she rolled onto her side and slid her large legs out of the bed. "One-two-three," she whispered and with a grunt pushed herself slowly into a sitting position. She slid her feet into fluffy pink slippers and stood up, wobbling slightly on her feet until she got her balance. "Dang, I hate mornings," she mumbled as she made her way to the bathroom.

An hour later, a clean and more awake Sandy grabbed her laundry and tottered down to the laundry room. As she entered the dingy room she was glad to see no one else there. She put the basket on a washer and began sorting through her clothes and quickly putting them into the empty washers before someone could come in and see her large granny panties in all their glory.

Just as she put the last item into the washer she heard footsteps behind her. With a feeling of panic she turned around. He smiled at her and went to the end dryer. "Oh Lord!" she thought, "not him."

It was the man from 4B, tall and handsome with an oh so gorgeous smile. But what made it bad was the way he kept starring at her. "Why do people have to be so mean," she thought as she put the coins in the slot and kept her head down ashamed. She knew he fond her disgusting, she felt like a freak in the circus. As quickly as she was able she set the washer and headed back to her apartment without glancing at him again.

Finally back in her apartment, Sandy plopped onto the couch and tried to catch her breath. She felt the tiny prick of tears trying to escape and gulped in some air. She was not going to let it bother her. Not this time. Sighing, she got up and went into the kitchen for some breakfast.

Cooking up some bacon and eggs and fried bread she rationalized all the food with the fact that dragging piles of laundry back and forth was hard physical work and she needed sustenance. But in the back of her mind she knew it was more than that. She was an emotional eater and this morning in the laundry room was very emotional. Bad emotions. But then did she ever have good emotions?

Sandy wiped up the last bits of egg with the toast and stuffed it into her mouth. She glanced at the clock and sighed. "Time to go back to the laundry room," she said to the empty room. On the way out she stopped at the hallway mirror and tried to straighten her unruly red hair and then snorted, "why do I bother, as if good hair will hide my ugly body".

She slinked down to the laundry room praying that she wouldn't run into anyone, especially "him". Luckily, she was all alone and was able to get the rest of the laundry done without being bothered. By the time the laundry was done it was lunchtime. She cooked up some hotdogs, grabbed a diet soda and sat down at the computer. This was the one place she felt good. Men loved her here, she had friends, male and female, who understood her and liked her despite her weight.

Sam38293829: good morning goddess
Sandy1963: Sam! I've been thinking about you
Sam38293829: oh? Naughty thoughts I hope
Sandy1963: lol is there any other kind?
Sam38293829: what are you wearing darling?
Sandy1963: nothing, just for u
Sam38293829: *growl* you know what you do to me
Sandy1963: tell me Sam J
Sam38293829: turn on your cam, let me see

Sandy turned on her web cam and proceeded to have a very graphic conversation with Sam38293829.

Sam38293829: wow baby you are the best
Sandy1963: *blush* ty darling, I love you
Sam38293829: I love you too sugar
Sandy1963: Oh Sam, when are you coming to see me?
Sam38293829: hey listen I gotta go, talk soon
Sandy1963: Oh ok bye Sam

Sighing sadly Sandy began reading the groups she belonged to and answering messages. She loved Sam and enjoyed their chats. They'd been chatting for months and he definitely liked the way she looked but when it came time to talking about his coming to see her he'd change the subject quickly. "Oh why does he have to live so far away?" she mumbled.

A few hours later Sandy went down and checked her mail and found her disability check. Although she was happy to get the money she wasn't very pleased about having to go out of the safety of our apartment building and down the block to the bank. She hated that people stared at her and giggled. Even though she walked with her head held high inside she would tremble and feel ashamed. "It isn't right," she thought, "that other people should make me feel this way. Why can't I just let it not bother me?"

"Oh well, it's time for Oprah!" she exclaimed heading back to her apartment. She ran to the kitchen for another soda and an afternoon snack. She pulled a chocolate bar out of the cupboard and sat down in front of the television. Tomorrow she will brave the bank and the outside world.
