ARTIST OF THE MONTH
This month's artist of the month is a Malaysian artist by the name of Haris Ribut.
Haris Ribut was born in Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia in 1951. He is a self taught artist who has been involved in producing artwork for the last 30 years. After becoming a full time artist in 1990, Haris has probably become best known for his Fat Women series. These stylised pieces are popular and Haris has individual collectors from all over the world who return to him for his work. Haris is now deservedly attracting attention and his work is becoming increasingly collectable.
Fat women with small or pointed hands, small pointy feet and brightly coloured traditional fabrics are the 'hallmark' of Haris Ribut. Whether having a 'chit chat', dancing or going about daily chores, his women are full of dynamism and motion. Haris' first encounter with his "fat lady" on canvas was just by fate, his mother to be exact. The solid mass of the woman body with their graceful movement were his muse. "An anecdote for worldly misery" noted Haris. Humorous at first look but a sincere perspective of reality. He has managed to convey beauty and subtleties of movement of his fat ladies. Big but not heavy, fat but not ugly; Passion rather than lust.
