Camryn Manheim

Camryn Manheim (born March 8, 1961) is an American Emmy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning actress known primarily for her roles as attorney Ellenor Frutt on ABC's The Practice and Delia Banks on CBS's Ghost Whisperer. Manheim is an avid human rights activist with a focus on women's rights, fat acceptance, and gay rights.

When Camryn Manheim won an Emmy for her role as Ellenor Frutt on "The Practice," she concluded her speech with the cry "This is for all the fat girls." It was a shout of triumph from a woman who has had to deal with weight issues all her life, and who knew she was not alone.

She started gaining weight at the young age of 10, which was when she moved to California. Her parents tried to make her lose weight. They had brought her to psychiatrists, hypnotists, and they bribed her.

When working on her masters degree at New York University's Tisch Drama School, she dropped 80 lbs in 9 months with the help of Speed, an illegal amphetamine, and became the darling of the drama department. When she graduated, the roles stopped coming her way. After an over dose of drugs, she realized that she needed to get her life on track. When she stopped using Speed, she gained all of the lost weight back again. When her father suggested that she start up again to lose the weight, she didn't speak to him for a year.

Camryn wrote a play titled "Wake up, I'm Fat". The show reflected a series of Camryn's experiences as a fat person in an unaccepting society. Her first book, Wake Up, I'm Fat, which was inspired by her one-woman show of the same name, is an irreverent and insightful look at the actress's efforts to accept herself for who she is and her ongoing quest to remind the world that beauty and talent come in all shapes and sizes.

It recounts Manheim's journey both as an actress and as a role model for the fat acceptance movement. With large measures of wit, she traces her stations of the crass: her parents setting weight goals with a contract at age 11, being rejected or ignored by men, even, at a party where overweight women can meet men, criticized for not being fat enough. What could have been a series of tedious lectures on touchy-feeley New Agey topic is instead a personal story about the development of an actress as well as a woman learning to live within her skin.
