Venus of Willendorf
A lot of people think of Spring with with images ranging from budding flowers, bunny rabbits, April Fool's Day pranks to Easter egg hunts. An area that tends to sometimes be overlooked is the association of Spring with fertility. Perhaps it comes from the whole “...like rabbits” idea!
In 1908, a small statue of a large naked woman was found by the Danube River outside of
Willendorf, Austria. It was made of limestone and has since been dated back to the Paleolithic era
(22,000BC). The unknown sculptor carved her Au-natural with very voluptuous breasts and an
overhanging belly that still allows her genitalia to be seen. She has a faceless head and her thighs are
pressed together, forming to an end without feet. At the time of her discovery, she had traces of a red
pigment on her vulva and is thought to symbolize menstruation. These trademarks show only the
necessary bodily functions for a woman to conceive and nurture a child, therefore quickly becoming a
statue idol of fertility.
Some argue that she has too many life-like characteristics and may have, in fact, been a model of a real woman. Some think she is Mother Earth. We will probably never know who or what she really was but one certainty is she is a fantastic piece of art and, although lacking in femininity, she exhibits a real, adult sexuality.
